Only original requests will be accepted online. For renewal, retention, replacement, conversion or transfer of a Special Interest License Plate, you must complete a Special Interest License Plates Application (REG 17) form and either mail it or submit it to your local DMV field office.
Just going thru this now.Go here:

Have had a few people talk shit to me about it, usually at the gas pumps. I really don't give a fuck. I like the look.

Yeah, they don't look good on a neon green Kia or most any newer car.....very few exceptions....The first time I saw the black and yellow plates on a car newer than they were were originally issued,...it just struck me as odd...As in it defeated the purpose why they were reassuring them...Oh well I'll get used to it...
Prius's and any Hybrids should be banned from having them at all, black plates represent huge fuel consumption not bird food dieters.[emoji1]

... My "this car",... as it is a '73 has the blue plates on it... The front one is pretty thrashed but I'm going to leave them on there...I doubt that I will ever get around to restoring the plates???...

I peeled off all the renewal stickers and left the first one, it was a '68. I drove it from Havasu to Texas, back to Havasu in '04, and took it to several lakes around Dallas in the 12 years I owned it.
Never got a second look from the cops, even though the plate had been expired for over 40 years.

So here is what you need to do. I asked DMV the same thing. Make a apt and bring the plates you wanna turn into the black plates. So they will give you temp plates for the 90 days it takes to get your new black plates back. Good luck View attachment 477007 just traded my plates in.

Looking good on a all black hellcat. Guy lives up the street from me has a set on a black gtr looks good.
Looks fine on that car, one near me with the black plates too.
If the car is white or black the black plates go ok but any of the newer aged colors and it looks like shit...imo

People that put black/yellow plates on late model cars. F'n posers. They should be reserved for the cars that came with those plates!!! Looks stooopid on anything else.
(and yes I know, nobody cares what I think!)

They will with vanity plates, I just did this with a old set I had lying around for 15 years. Surrender your old plates, fill out the form and write a check for $50, or you can choose a new letter/number sequence for your plates for the same $50. They will also do a random three letter/three number sequence (unpersonalized) in the black/yellow that will resemble the original series.

My '56 does as well, but I have the yellow plates originally issued to it. I think it was 67 or 68 when they had everyone switch. Some cars that were no-op or out of the system did not get switched.

To bad they did not get enough people to sign up for the yellow plates, would look nice on my 62 Cad
You can do yellows on a '62, you need to find a set of used plates with the registration tag, take them to DMV or AAA fill out the paper and pay your money. Look up "YOM plates CA" on Google for more info. As long as they were originally issued for that year car, you can use them.

:tbiAnyone on here transferred their current personalized plates to the new black plates and kept the same personalized number? If so, what was the process?
