Anyone on here transferred their current personalized plates to the new black plates and kept the same personalized number? If so, what was the process?

Maybe thius statement applies

Only original requests will be accepted online. For renewal, retention, replacement, conversion or transfer of a Special Interest License Plate, you must complete a Special Interest License Plates Application (REG 17) form and either mail it or submit it to your local DMV field office.

Just going thru this now.

Go here:
http://dmv.ca.gov/portal/dmv/?1dmy&urile=wcm:path:/dmv_content_en/dmv/portal/ipp2/welcome

You'll have to treat it as a custom plate. They don't automatically roll existing plates to classic ones.

I didn't transfer a personalized plate, but I did order a new personalized plate in the black/yellow. Took over four months to get! But it looks cool.:D

Can you do the plate transfer through AAA?

You can go to AAA. There a form to fill out and fifty or sixty dollars. This is if you already have existing plates. If you are ordering new to you plates it needs to done at the dmv or online. You then request DMV location to pick up. Last plates I Oder took eight weeks.

...The first time I saw the black and yellow plates on a car newer than they were were originally issued,...it just struck me as odd...As in it defeated the purpose why they were reassuring them...Oh well I'll get used to it...

I've done it both ways, transfer and new order. I transferred 8 vehicles from the standard white and blue personalized to the black and yellow. Ordered them back when they were still trying to get enough ordered to have it implemented. They needed 7500 orders before January 1st 2015. It was June of 2015 by the time they showed up. I've ordered 3 more sets of plates for vehicles I've purchased since then. It takes about 8 weeks to get them. Black and yellow are our company colors at Ultra Engineering. All of our trucks have yellow reflective on them, so the new plates just made sense. Have them on all of the vac trucks too.

Have had a few people talk shit to me about it, usually at the gas pumps. I really don't give a fuck. I like the look.

I saw someone of FB sand blasted the plates, painted them black, then hand painted the yellow letters. It turned out great, but seems like a lot of work if you can replace them for $50 (unless he was restoring original plates).

Yeah, they don't look good on a neon green Kia or most any newer car.....very few exceptions.
Prius's and any Hybrids should be banned from having them at all, black plates represent huge fuel consumption not bird food dieters.[emoji1]

No one has mentioned that you pay the additional "special plate" fee EVERY YEAR on your renewal too

Fees for CA Specialty License Plates

Specialty license plates have different fees than standard license plates.
NOTE: The fees below are plate fees only and DO NOT include your registration fees, which vary by vehicle and location.
The fees are:
Personalized plates:
Original: $48.
Renewal: $38.
Replacement: $38.
Retention: $38.

...and one sporting blue plates.

... My "this car",... as it is a '73 has the blue plates on it... The front one is pretty thrashed but I'm going to leave them on there...I doubt that I will ever get around to restoring the plates???...

I bought my vdrive from a guy in Havasu in 2001. The trailer was built in the 60's and had a black plate on it. The boat had been in storage for 25 years.

I peeled off all the renewal stickers and left the first one, it was a '68. I drove it from Havasu to Texas, back to Havasu in '04, and took it to several lakes around Dallas in the 12 years I owned it.

Never got a second look from the cops, even though the plate had been expired for over 40 years.

Kind of what I figured. Thanks for the information.
So here is what you need to do. I asked DMV the same thing. Make a apt and bring the plates you wanna turn into the black plates. So they will give you temp plates for the 90 days it takes to get your new black plates back. Good luck View attachment 477007 just traded my plates in.

This is one of my pet peeves....

People that put black/yellow plates on late model cars. F'n posers. They should be reserved for the cars that came with those plates!!! Looks stooopid on anything else.

(and yes I know, nobody cares what I think!)

Rant over.....

They will with vanity plates, I just did this with a old set I had lying around for 15 years. Surrender your old plates, fill out the form and write a check for $50, or you can choose a new letter/number sequence for your plates for the same $50. They will also do a random three letter/three number sequence (unpersonalized) in the black/yellow that will resemble the original series.

My '56 does as well, but I have the yellow plates originally issued to it. I think it was 67 or 68 when they had everyone switch. Some cars that were no-op or out of the system did not get switched.

You can do yellows on a '62, you need to find a set of used plates with the registration tag, take them to DMV or AAA fill out the paper and pay your money. Look up "YOM plates CA" on Google for more info. As long as they were originally issued for that year car, you can use them.

I'd like them to bring back sunset plates, but I'm sure I'm the minority.
